One Tree

These pieces are part of SCP's One Tree project, which sees the repurposing of a dying ash tree from founder Sheridan Coakley’s garden. It’s a project that focuses on wood: how we grow it, use it, and secure its future. The One Tree project seeks to create one-off objects of beauty, which will both retain the carbon from the tree and give new material life to something which would have otherwise disappeared.

These glass vessels were formed by voids in the ash tree, which were first created by birds, bugs and the fungus that infected the tree (Hymenoscyphus fraxineus - ash dieback). Each glass vessel is accompanied by the section of the tree from which it was created, now burned black on one side by the glass blowing process.
